2008年物流成本与服务标杆分析结果发布

继UnitedLog Consulting美国公司在美国CSCMP（美国供应链管理专业协会）年会上发布2008年物流成本与服务标杆分析结果后，UnitedLog Consulting中国公司总经理在08年中国物流竞争力高峰论坛上也向中国物流界的同仁们分享了这一成果，并共同探讨了最新的供应链发展趋势。

UnitedLog Consulting物流成本与服务数据库创建于1975年，于1977年开始每年在美国CSCMP年会上准时发布，它不仅反映欧美最新的宏观物流发展情况，也为各工商企业提供同行业的物流标杆分析服务。该数据库记录了订单处理、运输、仓储、库存管理等物流各个环节的成本和服务水平数据，并针对不同的行业分类统计。 该数据库涵盖北美及欧洲的主要国家，亚洲部分正在着手准备中。

The market of the future is in China

The days as a low-cost country are but a memory. Today, China is one of the most important and largest markets in the world.

– A major part of the world’s growth, production, research and, above all, future consumption is right here, says Carl Erik Sars, Co-founder and board member of UnitedLog (former United Logistics Group). 

UnitedLog is represented as a service provider in Supply Chain Management in the Chinese market since the beginning of 2004. The office in Shanghai has seven employees. That number will likely increase to 20 within a year.

– The need for our services keeps increasing. This is due to our Western customers are expanding their business in China and partly because the local Chinese companies request our services and “global knowledge” in Supply Chain and logistics, says Carl Erik Sars.

UnitedLog specialises in strategy, information support and management. Their business areas are Consulting (former Establish), Solutions (former United Solutions) and 4PL Operations (former United Operations). In Consulting, the focus is on business development in supply, production and distribution processes. Solutions assists companies in developing smart, efficient and innovative IT solutions for external logistics. 4PL Operations is running, optimising and streamlining logistics and information.

One problem facing companies setting up business in China today is that logistics are still unstructured, says Carl Erik Sars.

– The infrastructure is not developed outside of the big cities. Bureaucracy in, for example, customs is complicated and compared to the Western world logistics costs are very high. In China, logistics costs are around 20 percent of delivery value, while in Europe and the US it is around 7 percent. Since there are no total transportation suppliers, it is not easy to transport goods between different regions in the country. But since we are working with local people and have good knowledge of the Chinese market, we can assist companies in finding the right logistics and decrease costs. One competitive edge is understanding the Western as well as the Chinese business culture. In 5-10 years, Carl Erik Sars believes that the infrastructure will be more developed and stable. Until then, logistics is a big business obstacle but also an opportunity when you know how to deal with it.

With globalisation, competition between companies is getting fiercer. Being flexible and perceptive is more important than ever. UnitedLog assists companies in creating flexible logistic systems and streamlining production, distribution and purchasing on a strategic, tactical as well as operational level. UnitedLog assists many different companies, but in China there is a somewhat larger demand in workshops, telecom and retail.

Challenge of CO₂ emissions - a more holistic approach

Traditionally, transport has been seen as a tactical and/or operational issue and there are numerous examples of how companies have made changes of a tactical / operational nature that not only reduce the carbon footprint, but also improve the bottom line. Examples of such measures include the use of in-vehicle communications systems in order to avoid traffic congestion, educate drivers in ECO-driving, and improvements in the coordination and planning of shipments between facilities in order to improve the fill-rate of vehicles.

A common denominator among these measures is that they all relate to changes that decrease the amount of CO₂/tonne kilometre due to a decrease in overall fuel consumption. At the same time as companies have employed these types of changes, they have also been making strategic changes to their logistics systems that in many cases counteract the benefit of these measures. A typical strategic logistics decision is that of deciding how the logistics system should be configured in terms of number and location of production sites and warehouses. Decisions of this type determine the amount of tonne kilometres a logistics system generates.

Over the last few decades, customers have been demanding shorter lead-times, smaller order quantities, more frequent deliveries, and narrower delivery windows. Simultaneously, companies have sought to find economies of scale in their production and as a consequence, production plants and warehouses have become more dispersed. This development has led to an overall increase in the amount of tonne kilometres generated by companies’ logistics systems. This illustrates how companies need to approach the issue of transport and the environment in a more holistic manner if they are to curb the problem of increasing CO₂ emissions. There is a need to recognise that the carbon footprint of a logistics system is determined by decisions taken at all of these three levels.

Companies need to understand how to connect changes that affect the amount of tonne kilometres with changes that affect CO₂/tonne kilometre. There is also a need to be aware of, for example, how revised inventory levels or lead-time constraints affect a company’s opportunity to employ less polluting transport solution. In other words, there is a need for an understanding of the trade-offs that exist between transport and other supply chain issues. A first step towards achieving this is to start measuring the carbon footprint of the supply chain. If you do not measure your performance, you will not be able to improve it! This is true, whether we approach the issue of carbon reduction or more traditional supply chain efficiency.
